A girl in Astoria found hanging upside down in a stairwell with no blood left in her body and an Uber Eats order still warm beside her.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor called them \u201cunusual nocturnal incidents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NYPD called them ongoing investigations.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok called them vampires before anybody else did, because TikTok occasionally reached the truth by sprinting barefoot through twelve miles of bullshit.<\/p>\n<p>Then the markets arrived.<\/p>\n<p>They always do.<\/p>\n<p>War.<\/p>\n<p>Elections.<\/p>\n<p>Disease.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrity deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Interest rates.<\/p>\n<p>Now monsters.<\/p>\n<p>Within six months, people were trading contracts on confirmed vampire sightings, kills, infestations, and whether certain neighborhoods would be placed under curfew.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody had an angle.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody had a referral code.<\/p>\n<p>Mara hunted because she was good at it.<\/p>\n<p>She traded because killing vampires without hedging the outcome felt financially irresponsible.<\/p>\n<p>Her partner, Ellis, drove a twelve-year-old Honda Civic that smelled like garlic, wet wool, and french fries.<\/p>\n<p>His phone was mounted to the dashboard with three different apps open.<\/p>\n<p>DoorDash.<\/p>\n<p>TaskRabbit.<\/p>\n<p>Hunter.<\/p>\n<p>Hunter was technically still in beta.<\/p>\n<p>Independent Threat Mitigation Marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody called it that.<\/p>\n<p>You opened the app.<\/p>\n<p>You selected your radius.<\/p>\n<p>Then the jobs populated.<\/p>\n<p>Possible Nest. Surge Pricing Active. $375.<\/p>\n<p>No insurance.<\/p>\n<p>No benefits.<\/p>\n<p>No guarantee the client wasn\u2019t already dead.<\/p>\n<p>Ellis glanced at Mara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou bought YES?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo hundred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m diversified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou put eight hundred bucks on us killing something before five.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not exactly what I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is exactly what you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She checked the market again.<\/p>\n<p>YES had moved to 68\u00a2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp five cents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellis shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCivilization deserved this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The app sent them to Jackson Heights.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth-floor walkup.<\/p>\n<p>Client name: RAUL M.<\/p>\n<p>Threat category: Possible Familiar \/ Possible Vampire.<\/p>\n<p>Payout: $310.<\/p>\n<p>Tip: Not guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>Mara hated that line more than anything.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine surviving a vampire and still deciding whether your hunter \u201cearned\u201d the extra fifteen percent.<\/p>\n<p>They climbed the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Something smelled rotten.<\/p>\n<p>Not corpse rotten.<\/p>\n<p>Sweet rotten.<\/p>\n<p>Flowers left in water too long.<\/p>\n<p>Mara knocked.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Ellis drew a short-barreled shotgun loaded with silver buckshot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReady?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They entered.<\/p>\n<p>The apartment was dark except for the television.<\/p>\n<p>An infomercial played silently.<\/p>\n<p>A woman smiled while slicing tomatoes with knives sharp enough to butcher God.<\/p>\n<p>The client was sitting at the kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>Raul M.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-two years old.<\/p>\n<p>Accountant.<\/p>\n<p>Three kids according to the Hunter profile.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at them.<\/p>\n<p>His face was gray.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes were wet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy wife,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Mara looked toward the bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe came home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raul swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cemetery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellis sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara pulled up Kalshi.<\/p>\n<p>YES: 71\u00a2.<\/p>\n<p>She slipped the phone away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bedroom door was open.<\/p>\n<p>The woman stood beside the bed.<\/p>\n<p>Barefoot.<\/p>\n<p>Nightgown soaked dark at the hem.<\/p>\n<p>She was beautiful in the dead way.<\/p>\n<p>Too still.<\/p>\n<p>Too white.<\/p>\n<p>Like somebody had sculpted a woman out of candle wax and taught it hunger.<\/p>\n<p>Mara raised the crossbow.<\/p>\n<p>The vampire smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know what they pay me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara paused.<\/p>\n<p>Ellis whispered, \u201cDon\u2019t talk to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The vampire\u2019s eyes stayed on Mara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlood courier.
